Peer Tutoring: Become a Peer Tutor

Peer Tutoring information for Niagara College Community.

Why Become a Peer Tutor?

Approved tutors provide course specific support to students needing assistance and have the opportunity to determine their own set schedule. By becoming a tutor, you can make extra money while staying engaged in your program material. Tutors are paid $14.25 per hour, for up to 12 hours per week. Upon request, time spent in your tutoring sessions can also be recorded on your Co-Curricular Record.

Peer Study Assistant (PSA)

Peer Study Assistants provide the same support as Peer Tutors, but are currently enrolled in the same course as the students who need support. Please submit an online application through Get Involved. Before your application can be approved, we will obtain a recommendation from your professor that you are performing well in the class.

Please note, preference is given to a Peer Tutor if one is available.

Fall 2021

Peer Tutoring appointments will be conducted online for the start of the Fall term. As before, each student must book an online appointment to meet with a tutor. Video and audio are required for online appointments.

With the return to campus for some programs in September, In-person appointments may be added as an option for some courses.

Requirements for Becoming a Peer Tutor

You must meet these requirements in order to be considered:

  • Minimum of 80% in the course.
  • A professor’s recommendation.
  • You must be currently enrolled in classes or on co-op as a Niagara College student.
  • You should have a strong desire to help students succeed. Previous experience in tutoring is an asset, but not essential.

Peer tutors determine their own set weekly schedule and the number of hours available to work (max.12 hours/week). Each tutor is approved for specific courses and will be required to use video and audio when assisting students online.

Students who require help with their courses access the online schedule to view tutor availability and make appointments as needed. Appointment notifications will be sent to your Niagara College email to confirm details.
