Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are used to create content such as text, images, and audio that closely mimic human-produced material. As AI tools continue to evolve, the impact of AI on teaching, learning, and research represents challenges and opportunities for the NC community. The following addresses the ethical and legal uses of generated works in higher education. This page will update as new regulations, legislation and policy around copyright and generative AI are made available.
Hundreds of generative AI tools exist with more being developed all the time. It is impossible to provide a definitive list of all the tools covered by these guidelines. Here are some examples of tools that are considered generative AI for the purposes of these guidelines:
Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence system that creates new content, such as images, text, audio, video, computer code and other types of content via text prompts by a user. Generative AI systems use algorithms to learn the patterns and structures of a given dataset and then generate new content based on that understanding.
Generative AI has various applications, including generating realistic images, creating text, composing music, designing products, and much more. While AI has great potential for creative and innovative applications, the uses of AI generated works in an education context lead to questions of ownership, ethics, and academic integrity.
