English Mature Student Test
Niagara College uses the ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Reading and the Next-Generation Writing tests for admission purposes to fulfill English requirements for applicants.
Reading Assessment Content
The Reading test consists of four broad knowledge and skill categories that are being assessed:
- Information and Ideas (reading closely, determining central ideas and themes, summarizing, understanding relationships)
- Rhetoric (analyzing word choice rhetorically, analyzing text structure, analyzing point of view, analyzing purpose, analyzing arguments)
- Synthesis (analyzing the integration of information and ideas between related texts))
- Vocabulary (focus on the meaning of works and phrases as they used in particular contexts)
Reading Assessment Format
- Computer
- Test software will select questions based on your previous answers. To the best of you ability, answer all of the questions and do not skip any, as you cannot go back.
- All multiple choice - 20 questions
- Score Range: 200 - 300
- Required Score: 253
- Use of a dictionary is not permitted
Writing Assessment Content
The Writing test consists of two broad knowledge and skill categories that are being assessed:
- Expression of Ideas (development, organization, effective language use)
- Standard English Conventions (sentence structure, usage, and punctuation)
Writing Assessment Format
- Computer
- Test software will select questions based on your previous answers. To the best of you ability, answer all of the questions and do not skip any, as you cannot go back.
- All multiple choice - 25 questions
- Score Range: 200 - 300
- Required Score: 237
- Use of a dictionary is not permitted
