How to Cite ChatGPT in APA

According to the APA Style website, the general format for an AI tool citation would be as follows:

Reference List

Format:

Author. (Date). Name of tool (Version of tool) [Large language model]. URL

Example:

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

Intext Citation

Parenthetical:  (Open AI, 2023)  

Example: Sir John A. Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada (Open AI, 2023).

Narrative: Open AI (2023)

Example: According to Open AI (2023), Sir John A. Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada. 

How to Cite ChatGPT in IEEE

IEEE does not include information on how to cite ChatGPT in its Reference GuideIEEE’s Editorial Style Manual webpage, however, instructs users to follow the Chicago Manual of Style wherever the IEEE Reference Guide does not cover all uses. 

According to the Chicago Manual of Style’s website, use of ChatGPT should be referenced, whenever possible, as an in-text citation. The given example on the Chicago Manual of Style’s website is as follows:

In Text Citations

Example 1: 

The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT.

Alternatively, you can cite ChatGPT using a footnote in a document.

Reference List

The Chicago Manual of Style states that the use of ChatGPT does not need to be included in a formal references list, so long as it is cited in-text.
