The "Reference List" contains the full bibliographic information for your in-text citations. An example of a reference list for IEEE citation style can be found on the University of Victoria's (Melbourne, Australia) library website.

Book

Basic Format:

[1] J.K. Author, Title of Published Book, xth ed. City of Publisher, (only U.S. State), Country: Abbrev. of Publisher, year.

Example:

Chapter in a Book

Basic Format:

Six or More Authors

Basic Format:

A.B. Author et al. …

Example:

"Citations" are used in the text of your paper to document the source of the quotation/paraphrase/idea you are using.

Citations, in IEEE, are provided with a number, in square brackets, that corresponds with a numbered citation in your reference list. Your first citation will be numbered [1] with subsequent citations following in numerical order ... [2], [3], [4] etc. If you cite a source more than once, use the same number that you used for the first citation of that source.

In IEEE, in-text citations can be treated as a footnote.

Examples:

1. According to Brown [1], ….

2. … as mentioned previously [2].

3. Jones [3] and Smith [4] both argue that …

In-text citations can also be treated as nouns.

Examples:

1. According to [1] …

2. [2] argues that …
